, virginia where the president is holding a backyard discussion on healthcare reform. hreuts listen in. >> you have millions of people who are unemployed. you have hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their homes. there is a lot of apbg sit and stress out there. so much of our focus day-to-day is try to figure out how do we make sure that this recovery that we're slowly on starts accelerating in a way that helps folks all across the country? but when i ran for office i ran not just in anticipation of a crisis, i ran because middle class families all across the country were seeing their security eroded, partly because between the years 2001 and 2009 wages actually went down for the average family by 5%. we had the slowest job growth of any time since world war ii. the "wall street journal" called it the lost decade. and part of the challenge for families was is that even as their wages and incomes were flat lining their costs of everything from college tuition to healthcare was skyrocketing. and so what we realized was we had to take some steps to start dealing with these under
with the latest. >> reporter: later today, president obama heads to northern virginia to mark the six-month anniversary of the health care reform law, hailing some of the new protections that take effect this week. 4-year-old myra rakers' life will change this thursday in ways she's probably too young to understand. >> in the next couple of days, the most sweeping set of consumer protections go into law. >> reporter: protections like a ban on insurance companies imposing a lifetime limit on essential health benefits. just four years into her life, myra has had a kidney transplant and already hit her $500,000 lifetime coverage cap. >> they won't pay the claims. >> reporter: come september 23rd the insurance companies won't have a choice. >> just a huge weight has been lifted off of our shoulders. >> reporter: insurers will no longer be allowed to deny coverage to children even if they have pre-existing conditions, or stop providing coverage to customers because of technical errors on past applications. of course, these consumer protections don't come without a cost. >> impact is likely
of virginia you find gaga for gaga. it is the money waster, quote. >> we are exploring how our identity is challenged by gender and sexuality and how lady gaga is challenged. she is not afraid to be herself. it is reinvented at every curve in the road. >> she sounds husky. >> it doesn't confuse the human followers alone. >> i don't know if i find that romantic and sickening. >> imogen, aren't all the classes that include the words gender sex and identity, they are piles of poop. >> well, i originally thought so. then i looked deeper into the cause about gender and gender confusion and i signed up. we are confused about our gender. you know that. >> one of us will have lady gaga's jenna tale yaw. lady gaga is a question mark. >> her actual genitalia. >> we should end this discussion. bottom line, this just shows you how low our ecologists have sunk when -- these mickey mouse courses have been going on for years. >> however, every class about whether or not lady gaga is packing junk is whether or not they are passing western history. so i'm all for that. they are not trying to rewrite wha
is something that we have to debate about, but i do not believe in sanctuaries. host: alexandria, virginia. oscar, democratic line. caller: i just came to the united states. i am a legal resident now. before people talk about the eagles not paying taxes -- talk about illegals not paying taxes , we do not steal the numbers, we just invent them. in my case i work for seven years with a fake number that they took. for seven years i have worked, i will never get the money with my three jobs and we do pay taxes. inform yourself. you will understand that most undocumented people do pay taxes. make sure that the criminals do not get any identification in your passage of this law. the people that have worked really hard to put food on the table for their families, but they wanted an opportunity. forgive them. those k -- host: ok. congressman? guest: becoming a naturalized citizen, i understand what he is saying. but what you are saying validates what i have been saying. looking as social security, the last numbers i saw were over $4 billion there, people like yourselves that i put money in and pro
mean, the state of virginia, you know very well a few weeks ago in that primary vote, you were up, what, 35 percent in a republican turnout over last time? >> huge. bill: that's substantial. >> you're going to have -- there's no doubt in my mind you're going to have a very big republican turnout and much of it if not most of it will be a protest vote. protest votes are very powerful motivation, not to be underestimated and apathy in midterms with the party in power is also a very distinct problem that occurs tile and again, particularly when times are bad, and times remain bad in the eyes of most americans. americans weren't loving the way the economy was growing when it was growing in the middle years of the bush administration, they certainly aren't happy with it now and they're not going to be happy any time soon. these measures taken now by the president i don't think are going to have any noticeable effect. bill: we'll debate if this in 30 minutes with doug schoen and brad blakeman. good to see you. >> i hope so. juliet: such a cool guy. >>> tropical storm hermine barreling into th
discontinued south of here. hurricane warnings still to the north carolina-virginia border. we've got tropical storm watches and warnings. and then for new england, we have hurricane warnings, because there is a very good possibility that earl could strike nantucket, jutting out there into the atlantic. again, the storm surge is about 2 to 3 feet, maybe 4 in some sections. five really in unusual areas. and again, this system is very tightly packed. it is raining but there's dry air to the north and so it's having a little trouble getting the northern fringes of the storm up into the new york area right now. rainfall amounts generally about 3 to four inches, some areas may pick up 5 to 6 inches and as you can see offshore of new england the rainfall amounts go over the rain bucket more than ten inches of rain. so a very potent storm still. still a dangerous storm, but as you said it could have been a lot worse. back to you. >> thank you, al. we'll check back in a couple of minutes. let's go down the coast about 50 miles. jim cantore is in cape hatteras. jim, how's it looking there? >> reporter:
